Why I Coach

 “Someday, life will get tough for you.  You’ll be two months late on your house payment, your car will quit, you won’t have a job, your wife tells you she loves someone else.  That’s when you’ll find out what you’re made of.  What are you going to do then? Quit? That’s when you’ll learn what I’m trying to do.” – Paul “Bear” Bryant

 I’ve always used this quote to answer the question of Why do I coach?  My hope has always been that I can pass on to my athletes some of the knowledge I’ve learned from life lessons.  I hope my kids learn that:

 A season mirrors the trials of real life.  As a person/athlete the journey for the fulfillment of your hopes and dreams begins from within.

There is a great lesson found in Hebrew 11:1 “Faith is to be sure of the things we hope for and to be certain of the things we cannot see.”  Be they good times or bad times you can never stop believing. 

To have others listen to you, speak by embodying; courage, pride, and intelligence.

Embrace respect and honor through; sacrifice, endurance, and determination.

Never be arrogant, always be modest, and always be humble.

Never take more than what’s needed; but, always give more than what’s asked.

So why do I coach?  To teach young people that through hard work they will exceed their own expectations while overcoming other people’s assumptions allowing them to capture their aspirations.

The wrestling family wishes Coach McCoy and his family well in the future and know that he will never fully be out of our lives.

Jacob Williams (132) and Mitchell Goldbach(120) are the remaining Cap 8 seniors and Damien Dozier(195) adds to the list of total Cap 8 wrestlers in the tournament.  Dozier is in the finals at 195 and has a chance to become a state champion for Enloe high while Goldbach and Williams are guaranteed placers and battle to return to the 3rd place match.  Williams faces Alex Ynoquio from Cary high in the Consolation semifinals and Goldbach faces old foe Drew Turner who lost a heartbreaker in the championship semifinals.  Good luck Cap 8.

We from the Cap 8 wish luck to all of its qualifiers and hope that they abstain from injury and do their absolute best no matter the circumstance.  The Conference has two less qualifiers it had the previous year but we hope to have 15 placers.  Good luck Cap 8 and be sure to check he brackets and here for the Cap 8 State Updates.

He has an undefeated junior varsity record in his two years of wrestling.  Murray, as a freshman, wrestled for Sanderson but transferred out the following year.

He returned his junior year but was not eligible to wrestle at that point in time.  When his senior year came around it seemed he would bask in the glory of returning wrestlers whom had stayed at Sanderson for four years.  That, fortunately, was not the case.

When starting 220 pounder Ramzy Ruiz was injured at the start of the season the spot was influx; no one knew what would happen at that position.  Murray wrestled off and eventually became the starter.

Always with a smile Murray fights tooth and nail every match, no matter the opponent and leaves everything on the mat.  As the 7th seed  in the regional tournament hopes were not high from others about Murray making the state tournament with only 1 year varsity experience.

The Spartans thought he could “sneak in” possibly winning a 4th spot at regionals but Murray exceeded all and any expectations.  In the first round of the regional tournament the Spartan wrestled to a decision victory over the 10th seed 7-1.

It was expected.  What happened next was not.  Murray wrestled the number 2 seed from Broughton that had beaten him twice already and many thought that would be Murray’s trip to the consolation round.

They were wrong.  Sebastian Murray defeated the number 2 seed 7-3 and advanced to the championship semifinals along with four other Spartans.

He then had another tough task on his hands; taking down the number 3 seed from Northern Durham whom had put together quite the season so far.  In the end Murray had won the match 3-0 and secured a spot in the 4a Mideast Regional finals.

Murray had punched his ticket to the big dance and was the only Spartan to successfully win their semifinal match.  He is the first 220/215 pounder to advance to the state tournament in Jeremy Barefoot’s tenure as head coach.

Giving everything is what Murray did at regionals and giving more is what he will continue to do.
